The Ministry has undertaken several initiatives to promote the adoption of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS), highlighting benefits like interoperability, developing the local tech ecosystem, reducing costs, conserving foreign exchange, achieving vendor independence, supporting localization, and minimizing copyright concerns. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that Open Source Software is a key enabler in achieving Digital Democracy in India — helping citizens connect digitally with government services.
India’s largest digital platforms — Aadhaar, MyGov, UPI, Aarogya Setu and many fast-growing startups — are powered by Open Source technologies. Transparency, privacy, and security are core principles behind these systems, perfectly aligning with India’s long-term vision for an open, secure, and digitally empowered ecosystem.
